Marzahn-Hellersdorf combines two fundamentally different building worlds in one borough. In the north, Marzahn extends as Europe's largest prefab housing estate with WBS 70 system large-panel high-rises with central cast-iron and HT plastic riser pipes. Hellersdorf followed in the 1980s with a similar, slightly newer stock. Both estates share an identical problem: thousands of residential units on shared downpipes whose load is significantly higher than in any other Berlin housing form.
The south of the borough forms the complete contrast. Biesdorf, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf form Berlin's largest contiguous detached housing area – the so-called Siedlung der Eigenheimer. The houses predominantly date from the 1920s to 1960s, with correspondingly old main lines. Stoneware and clay pipes run beneath garden ground with old tree stock. Root intrusion through leaking joints is the most common cause of pipe blockages here. The drinking water comes from the Friedrichshagen and Wuhlheide waterworks according to Berliner Wasserbetriebe, with a hardness of 14 to 18 degrees German hardness – hard enough for noticeable limescale buildup in older pipes.
