Nauen is the district capital of Havelland and lies to the west of Berlin. The town centre and the districts of Groß Behnitz, Markee, Ribbeck and Wachow make up the municipality. The town centre has the structure of a traditional Brandenburg market town: Wilhelminian-era houses along the main streets, with courtyard properties and outbuildings behind them. To the east of the centre stand prefab GDR-era apartment blocks. The outlying districts are rural in character – with manor houses, old farmsteads and detached houses. Each building type comes with its own pipe systems and its own weak points.
The old buildings in the town centre have drainage pipes of cast iron and stoneware that after over 80 years of operation can be severely corroded. In the prefab estate, limescale deposits narrow the pipes – water in Havelland is hard. In rural districts such as Ribbeck and Groß Behnitz, main drains run as clay pipes beneath garden plots. Leaking socket joints are the entry point for tree roots, especially on old manor estates with a large tree population. Near the Havel and around Kähnsdorfer See, heavy rain can raise the groundwater level and cause backflow in basement pipes.
