Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf lies east of Berlin in the Märkisch-Oderland district. The municipality includes the districts of Fredersdorf, Vogelsdorf, Petershagen and Eggersdorf. The S-Bahn station Fredersdorf connects the municipality directly to central Berlin via the S5 line. The settlement pattern is shaped by detached houses on generous plots: settlement houses from the 1930s to 1960s stand next to newbuilds erected after 1990. The Löcknitz river flows through the municipal area and, together with the shallow water table, ensures damp soil conditions – for drain cleaning this means an increased risk of backflow and constant pressure on the main drain lines.
The older settlement houses in Fredersdorf and Eggersdorf were typically equipped with clay pipe main drain lines that become leaky at the socket joints over the decades. The old tree stock on the large plots – pines, birches, oaks – drives roots specifically into these leaking spots. The long main drain runs across the spacious plots do not make things easier: between the house drainage and the sewer connection there are often 20 metres or more, which must be inspected in full when problems arise. In Vogelsdorf and the more rural areas of Eggersdorf, isolated plots with older drainage technology that has never been fully modernised still occur.
