Hoppegarten lies east of Berlin in the Märkisch-Oderland district. The municipality consists of the districts Hoppegarten, Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten, Hönow and Münchehofe. It is best known for the Galopprennbahn Hoppegarten racecourse. The rural character with large plots and old tree stock around the racecourse has direct consequences for drain cleaning: roots penetrate through leaking sockets into the main drain lines, especially in the settlement houses with their clay pipe joints. The Löcknitz river flows through the municipal area and influences the groundwater level in the waterside residential areas.
Hönow is the largest district in the municipality and the terminus of Berlin's U5 underground line – the only point at which the U-Bahn leaves the Berlin city boundary. Around the U-Bahn station, multi-family buildings were constructed in the 1980s using GDR-era prefab methods; their riser and downpipes are correspondingly burdened after four decades. Limescale deposits in the lines are among the most common causes of blockages here. Since reunification, numerous newbuild districts have emerged in Hönow and the other districts – detached houses and terraced houses with modern KG pipes that bring different problems than the older stock. Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten has established itself as a commercial location: office complexes, logistics areas and gastronomy operations place their own demands on the wastewater infrastructure.
