Ahrensfelde is a municipality in the Barnim district, directly east of the Berlin city border. It borders the Berlin borough of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and is connected to the Berlin network as the terminus of the S7 commuter line. For drain cleaning this is relevant because different building eras meet here: GDR-era prefab buildings in Blumberg, historic village cores with clay-pipe main lines in Eiche and Mehrow, newbuild estates from the 1990s and 2000s, and rural areas in Lindenberg with some very old pipework.
The Wuhle, a tributary of the Spree, rises near Ahrensfelde. In the lowlands around Eiche and Mehrow, this leads to an elevated groundwater table – heavy rain pushes water into basements via leaky main lines. Water in the Barnim region is also hard and encourages limescale deposits in pipes. The prefab buildings in Blumberg are particularly affected: shared riser pipes carry waste water for many tenants, and after the 1990s refurbishments, limescale and organic residues have built up again in the lines. In Eiche and Mehrow, the former villages with historic building stock, many main lines still date from GDR times and earlier – clay pipes with porous socket joints through which roots and soil intrude.
